This is a conversation I had during my visit to Kraków with Michael Rubenfeld, a Canadian Jewish theatre artist: writer, director, actor, and producer, whom I knew from Canada and interviewed several times, e.g. in Episode 20, when we discussed his unforgettable play “We Keep Coming Back” about his and his mother’s first visit to Poland, where his family roots are (A life-changing trip to Poland (Episode 20) (now coming back to Toronto!). Our latest interview was part of my Tribute to Ukraine series on POLcast – Michael, already living in Krakow, through his theatre festival FESTIVALT, organized an aid for Ukraine through art campaign (Episode 90: “Fight With Art” – aid for Ukraine).
Michael now lives in Krakow with his wife Magda and young son Lev. And he does what he did in Canada – theatre.
There aren’t many Jewish Canadians who settle in Poland for good, so this conversation was really intriguing – Michael shared with me his experience and thoughts. How this happened and why, how it feels after 8 years, how life in Poland differs from Canada, what it’s like to do theatre in Poland. He also talked about his presence on social media, which has become a very valuable source of knowledge about Poland for him.
The great news is that since we talked in Krakow, Michael’s play “Schron przeciwczasowy” (“Time Shelter”) starring iconic Anna Dymna has opened in the legendary Stary Theatre in Krakow:
